Join fiddler extraordinaire Brian Farrow, New Orleans-based singer-songwriter Dusky Waters and local musicians Sinclair Palmer and Brevan Hampden as they cook up an energetically acoustic musical gumbo to pay tribute to Nina Simone and New Orleans guitar and violin pioneer Lonnie Johnson.

Visitor Information
Music in the Gardens concerts take place on the lawn behind the Doris Duke Center. Lawn chairs, picnics, and blankets are encouraged. Pets are not allowed. Outside food and beverages, including beer and wine, are permitted and will also be available for purchase on-site from The Palace International. The lawn will open at 6 p.m. before each concert. University parking at the Gardens is $2/hour until 7 p.m. In the event of rain, concerts will take place at Baldwin Auditorium on Duke’s East Campus. Location changes will be announced by 1 p.m. on the day of the event.

About the Artists
Brian Farrow:
Brian Farrow is a musician, educator, songwriter, and independent researcher who has a focus in reshaping and reflecting American’s musical history through sharing stories, creative musical expression through popular/historic musical structures, and inclusive dialog. From touring with Grammy award winner Dom Flemons to giving talks at the Library Company of Philadelphia, and running a music program in Greece with the refugees, Mr. Farrow forms a discipline in understanding the unspoken roots of music and exploring the impact of expression on cultural history.
Dusky Waters:
Dusky Waters is the project founded by singer-songwriter Jenn Jeffers. She uses the name Dusky Waters as a nom de plume as well as an expression of her affinity for the magic of twilight hours and the presence of the Mississippi River that has anchored her life from her childhood on the banks of its tributary, the Arkansas River in Little Rock, to her early twenties in the delta of northern Louisiana, to her current crescent city home on the Gulf Coast. Absorbing and exploring the sounds that she uncovered along the way, her songs ultimately uncover what it is to be a Black, Southern, millennial woman, negotiating the 2020s.
